Be Aware of Unexpected QR Codes

October 26, 2024

Scanning QR codes is something we’ve gotten used to doing without thinking twice. But because of a new scam, we recommend you use caution when scanning codes from untrusted sources.

The scam – which is a form of “brushing” – is created when someone receives an unexpected package from an unknown sender, along with instructions to scan a QR code to determine the sender. Once you scan the QR code with your mobile phone, all your personal and financial information is sent to scammers.

Bottom line: treat QR codes just like email links – only scan codes or click on links from trusted sources, and when in doubt, reach out to the alleged sender via verified contact information to ensure that you’re keeping your personal and financial information safe. It’s important to stay vigilant online.
